Size does matter (reloaded)

From small to big and beyond

Prologue

There are videos that one might eventually wish were never made (and published). Yes my friends, there are. I know your dirty mind may wander somewhere in the pink/booze/sex, drugs & rock'n'roll department, but what i refer to is this one.

The video ad that should not be

Yes Sir, i am talking about this official Apple video ad for the iPhone 5 where the narrator calls upon our common sense and clearly points out that "our thumb goes from here to here".  Is it just me or does the video clearly imply that anything bigger than what your thumb can reach without significant strain actually defies common sense? Huh, Apple?

How do people feel about this video while everybody already knows that the next iPhone will be offered in L (4.7 inch) and XL (5.5 inch) variations only? I cannot but reproduce a comment (of the video in the above link) of a certain 'Paul Mancine' who clearly asks:

"So given that Apple Fan Zombies believe everything fed to them, does the larger screen on the new upcoming Iphone mean that evolution has given us longer thumbs in record time? Or does it mean that the standard Apple fan will just believe anything they tell them and think it's the best thing ever? Hmmm....."

While i sincerely believe that Apple fans (myself included) do not always qualify as zombies, i certainly do agree with Paul. You see, dear reader, Apple has been trying to convince us that a 3.5 inch cellphone screen is the ticket to Paradise for quite some years and later on tried to tackle the (by now infamous) Schnitzel problem by moving up to 4 inches, offered the above video as a means to justify what cannot be justified.

Let us all pretend we believe Apple that on a moment of true revelation a voice from the sky told their executive team that they should stretch the iPhone 4S screen to iPhone 5 dimensions because it would be good for humanity. (I clearly state here that i mostly agree with the video commercial and actually think that the optimal screen size for people with M sized hands (undeniably the majority) is 4.3 inch with a 4:3 ratio, as was the case with (possibly) the best phone ever made.)

How are they going to feed us the news that 4.7 inch is now the optimal size? Were they mislead in the past and just managed to drink from the fountain of truth? Were they correct in the past and trying to deceive us now? Were they correct in the past and correct now as well? But of course, is is Apple we are talking about here, these guys are always correct. But just for a tiny fraction of second, let's hypothesise that they were wrong in the video ad, do you think they would ever admit it?

The man who ate his words

Networking pioneer Robert Metcalfe in 1995 predicted a total collapse of the Internet in the following year (1996) and as the elder among you might remember was proven wrong. During his keynote speech at the sixth International World Wide Web Conference in 1997, he took a printed copy of his column that predicted the collapse, put it in a blender with some liquid and then consumed the pulpy mass. Yeap, the man literally ate his words

The Apple way

Okay, i certainly am not expecting Tim Cook or Johny Ive to eat their video, practical reasons aside. To be frank, i would say Tim doing that is far more probable than Johny, by the way. Anyway. I am eager to see how they are going to try and justify the transition form M size to L and XL. My guess is they are not going to say one thing about it in the keynote. They will just try to force feed us their unequivocal truth, the way the usually do. (Reminder to annoyed readers: I am an Apple fan. I have a Macbook Air, an iPad and two iPhones and i love each of them.) Just the way an annoyed (by the signal reception drop when holding the phone by the steel bands (the obvious way to hold it, by the way)) iPhone 4 user was advised by (an even more annoyed) unforgettable Steve Jobs to "Just avoid holding it in that way"!

Epilogue

I love my iPhone. I love the OS, the tight integration between my Apple devices (which will get even better with iOS 8 and continuity) and above all i love it's size and weight. This is a very important reason i am not considering an Android flagship right now. They are far too big for my taste.

Image from bgr.com (link)
However, the iPhone 6 (or whatever they decide to call it) will be significantly larger than what i am used to so far. In fact, if the rumours are true (and i bet they are) the next iPhone will measure 138.14mm long x 66.97mm wide x 6.9mm thick.

Wanna know what the Galaxy Alpha's dimensions will be? Exactly 132.4mm long x 65.5mm wide x 6.7mm thick with a weight of 114 gr. Smaller in every dimension than the next iPhone, that is.

Get it now dear Apple? The size factor that was of uttermost importance to many people shall not remain your strong card, not anymore. It is true that in M sizes the iPhone was the indisputable king, but in the L and XL categories? What is going to happen? Competition is stiff.

And one more thing, where is the God damned iWatch? Huh? The Gear 2 is here for quite some time and getting better all the time, the standalone Gear Solo is almost here, the magnificent Moto 360 will be here on September 4. You know that, right? You know that if i am desperate (and i am) for a decent smartwatch, then my phone must run Android. And the Galaxy Alpha is very very close to the iPhone 6 regarding every hardware/manufacturing aspect....

The impossible just happened

Way out of your league, right?

Okay readers, you may have had a significant other half that was way out of your league in the looks department (it is of course a big discussion, but you may rest assured that good looks is not the only factor you should take into consideration, mainly because looks tend to deteriorate over time - kind of like Windows OS tends to get messed up even if you don't mess with it, given sufficient time - of course). In that case, you may (just may) be able to begin imagining how i feel after seeing the One (sorry HTC One, there seems to be enough space for three ones - if you know what i mean).

Back to the gorgeous girlfriend, then. Imagine a girl with Gisele looks, Einstein brains and Arnie power that will still fall in love with you, average Joe. Can it be done? Nope? Of course not.

Killer combination

The tech universe however is a big place where almost everything is possible. Yeap. Ladies and gentlemen, please stand up and clap your hands like crazy.

The real One

The real One is here at a price that makes wet dreams feel like going to work on a Monday morning.

The real One: Better than good sex

The great news

It is absolutely crazy but this God damned übersmartphone has a spec list that will make you drool over it and costs ONLY 269 EUR for the 16 GB version (299 EUR for the 64 GB - it should be a no brainer which one to buy since there is no micro SD expansion slot)! I am not one to reproduce specs as you already know, but this time they really are worth SHOUTING all over the place:

  • Snapdragon 801, quadcore @ 2,5 GHz
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 3 GB of RAM
  • 5.5 inch 1080p IPS panel (Gorilla Glass 3)
  • 13 MP f/2.0 Sony Exmor IMX214 (6-lens module) sensor & 5 MP wide-angle selfie cam
  • Loud stereo speakers
  • CyanogenMod 11S OS (based on Android 4.4)
  • EXCELLENT price
Oh my God! This thing should cost at least 800 EUR if Samsung or HTC was the one to manufacture it. Which leads me to the obvious conclusion that the whole top tier smartphone pricing scheme is indeed a bad joke. It can be done with 269 EUR, therefore the extra five hundred (until you have what it takes to purchase an iPhone 5S) are a big steal. And you are the victim. Simple as that.

The not so great (but still not very bad) news

  • No micro SD
  • No USB 3.0 / Quick Charge 2.0
  • It is way too big (personal opinion, see it all here)
  • It is not an iPhone

The conclusion

Are you living in one of the following countries?

Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States.
Get up. Ask yourself "do i want a big smartphone?". If you hear back a yes, then put your hands in your pockets take out 299 EUR and go get the 64 GB version of the One. Get back home. Forget your friends/family for a while. Feel very special. Be happy.

I will say no more.

Life starts at 55

Bigger is better

Hey readers, what's up? Wanna hear some news?

Although i am the small gadget (cellphones, smartwatches, tablets, ultrabooks and such...) kind of gadget freak and i do not really watch TV (my set is probably in standby 95% of the time and this is by no means one of my usual exaggerations that have helped make me that famous) i bought a new TV set just a few days ago. It was supposed to be a bargain, so i bit the bullet and went for a big TV this time.

My old one was an LG HD-ready 32 incher that was the cheapest 32 incher one could find back in early 2009. I have mainly used it for movies and some gaming (back when i had the XBOX 360 - before accepting the fact that i cannot use a joypad, that is), but all in all this TV was very little used.

My old TV is now resting face down on a sofa and is desperately seeking a new place where it can find the love it deserves.

My new TV is the Samsung UE55F6670SS. First of all let me tell you: It is BIG. The box it came in was bigger than most apartments in Hong Kong.

Huge TV on top of happy (camera shy) blogger
For those among you who are easily upset, let me assure you that: No bloggers were harmed in the making of this magnificent photo.

It is 55 inch (138 cm) big, it is a SmartTV and it supports 3D through it's (included) two pairs of active glasses. This could get too technical/boring/not notjusthitech here if i wanted to give you the full specs. As usual i am going to skip the technical jargon that you can find all over the internet and give you my honest (first impressions kind of) opinion about this behemoth of a TV set.

Who needs a real sunset?

Lean and thin

The facts:

1) There is no such thing as a too big TV screen. Simple as that.
2) When unboxing a big TV you have to have someone help you, unless you are an "almost there" Arnie wannabe.
3) The polystyrene foam parts that are used to protect the TV when boxed CANNOT be put back in the exact same way after the TV is extracted. Entropy is always increasing.
4) The placement of the TV is of paramount importance regarding the quality of the whole experience. Before you buy a TV set, study your room and search the internet for advice.
5) Attaching the leg of a flatscreen TV is unbeliavably complicated for what it is. Especially when no instructions are included because it is considered a triviality by the manufacturer.
6) Modern TVs are more PC than TV than the opposite. Trust me on this one.
7) 3D was, still is and shall remain a gimmick that should rather quickly (after a month or so) wear off. If it doesn't you may consider consulting your shrink. The first time you watch 3D porn, though , should indeed be one of these rare moments of true happiness adults can experience.
8) A crap movie shall remain a crap movie, no matter how badass your TV set is.
9) Setting up a latest gen Smart TV is very easy, as long as you are working as IT stuff or have a PhD in rocket science or both. For everyone else, moving beyond the basic TV functionality looks like a nightmare where you have to find your way through a labyrinth of menus with a half arsed remote control as your only weapon. Good luck.
10) Your mother will always think your TV is too big.
11) Your girlfriend will always complain that your TV is too big. Still she is going to love it. Of course she will never admit it.
12) The margins around the gorgeously huge screen of your latest gen TV are significantly smaller than those on your iPhone 5S that costs roughly the same amount of money.
13) If you are even half serious about surfing the Web or watching Youtube on your big screen you definetely have to invest on a BT keyboard. Unless you actually enjoy typing with the on screen keyboard.
14) Ambient lighting in the room is a factor to seriously take into account before fine tuning your settings.

Personal opinion

I am not a specialist regarding TV sets. I do not care very much about achieving the perfect picture quality. TV is not my thing. (My thing is smartphones and smartwatches, but you already knew that.) Still i am not a total noob. I can tell a good TV set when i see one.

My new TV is a fantastic piece of hardware that fills the room. Literally, as well. It looks good, it sounds good, it becomes the topic of attention even when it is turned off. When i turn it on, women tend to show me more love.

It comes with two remote controls a touch and voice enabled one for the family geek (that would be me) and a cheapo/regular/boring one for the girlfriend who is constantly dropping her iPhone on the floor. It is obvious that Sammy has consulted marriage counsellors before coming up with this brilliant idea!

I like watching movies, YouTube, 3D videos, even TV. Although the quality of terrestrial TV (here in Greece, at least) when blown up to 55 inches of glory is totally rubbish. Still, watching soap operas on a quarter cinema display feels great...

What about the gadget side?

My TV is also a gadget. Possibly the biggest one i have ever had. It connects to the internet, has more ports than the average 12 year old could count up to, plays content from portable hard drives, connects to my Withings Smart Scale so that everyone in the living room can find out how much fat i put on since yesterday evening. What else can a man desire?

The Samsung app allows you to take the big screen with you to the bathroom, for those "Did i just finish War and Peace (much longer novels do exist - there is hope for even the unluckiest among us) for the second time in a row and still nothing?" moments of true glory, even if it is a reality show rerun being watched on a germ infested iSomething that helps your bowels move a little.

There are lots of apps for the iPhone apart from the official one but i haven't had the chance to use them just yet (after all the damned TV is 5 days old, for God's sake) and i have even heard something about custom firmwares!

The verdict

If you want to buy a new TV, make sure it is equal or larger than 55 inches in diagonal. You really can live without micro local dimming (i think) but a small display is a small display no matter how good it is. The Samsung i bought is a looker even when it shows nothing. When you turn it on, the experience gets even better (actually that depends on what you choose to watch - sometimes a blank screen is better). Then again, you know your needs better than i do and a TV is a product with a quite long life cycle so do not listen to me. What do i know? I have just reached 55.

Do you want to wear Android?

The next gen of smartwatches is finally here

The smartwatch is the new king. I have been telling you right from the start (my first ever post was dedicated to smartwatches) and now it is time to let you know that Gen 2 has officially started.

The LG G Watch and the Motorola 360 are the first of this new generation of smart(er)watches and Android Wear is behind both.

Take a first look at them:

LG G Watch

Moto 360
Okay, the LG G looks good, clean, industrial. But the Moto 360 truly is an object of desire! In fact it is the first smartwatch so far that actually looks too good to be true.

I will be back on this one but hear me out people: Apple is going to have a really hard time with this one.

After whining for all these months about the smartwatches i have had so far, let me tell you that what i see above is indeed a dream come true. If only they do not mess up with water resistance and compatibility they have a true winner in their hands. If any top brass from Motorola ever sees this, please please please congratulate the designers who made this a reality.

MWC 2014 - Samsung unpacked event

Hey readers, what's up? Did you watch the Samsung Unpacked 5 event tonight? Wanna know what i think about it? You do, right?

Before i start, let me please share some thoughts about the new trend that is emerging and that actually dominated the MWC event.

The fitness business

It is becoming quite apparent to everyone that all manufacturers are heavily focused on what i call the fitness business. Through hardware and software they want to keep us healthy and fit and of course take our money.

Personally speaking i think that this fitness orientation is mainly a good thing that could actually help mobile tech users become and stay healthy. Of course, Samsung has overdone it again. All the Gears as well as the S5 sport an HR sensor. On the Gears it certainly is a good thing to have but on the damned phone? Come on, Sammy you know it's just a gimmick. I do not need this on the phone and i am only going to be using it once or twice a year (if i am lucky) or a minute (if my compulsive obsessive disorder syndrome really kicks in). So thank you, but no.

Back to the business, uhmm, fitness i mean. Let me assure you here and now that in the future you will be carrying more fitness sensors than you care about and still be carrying these extra kilos of fat on your belly. Pedometer? Check. GPS? Check (not on the Gear though and this is driving me mad). HR sensor? Check. Temperature/Humidity sensor? Check. All we need is a stupidity sensor so that we can mingle with people who also believe that all this sensor overdose will move us from fat to fit in no time.

Yo, manufacturers, take it easy. The average Joe will not work out anymore than he already does or get off the couch just because he carries a handful of fitness oriented gadgets. Not that you actually care of course, but i can sympathise with you: It is this God damned time of year that you are supposed to innovate.

I do admit that people who are already exercising may benefit a little from the new fitness trend, but keep in mind that for example even moderately serious runners with no tech background are already using a GPS watch. And they may not be willing to change.

The S5

Looks

Galaxy S5 inspiration candidate #1
Oh my God. Why does it look so much like the S4 and the S3 and the S1? Why? (By the way, why is  the iPhone 5S 95% identical to the iPhone 5?) WHY? I do quite like this "perforated" look people are already joking about. But, plastic? Again? Really, Samsung? It feels like a horror movie where someone wakes up each day trying to forget the terrors of the night before and it is only getting worse. Hey, Sammy CsmthO's please please please do your company a favour and fire your Galaxy S phones'  design department. ALL OF THEM. And God help us, if they find another job in the same industry,

Size

Galaxy S5 inspiration candidate #2
Of course, it is too big. Of course, the screen got a little bigger. Of course, it cannot be used by regular people with regularly sized hands. The IP67 rating also contributed in the increased size of the S5. I know there are those among us who seem to like these giant phones, but i have to disagree. For me 4.5 inches (not widescreen ala iPhone 5, mind you) are the ideal (screen) size which combined with a marginally thin bezel could result in a great tradeoff between screen real estate and overall phone size.

Specs

No need to tell you anything. Android flagships' hardware has been a total overkill for a long time and of course the S5 continues the tradition.  But wait, is that an HR sensor under the camera lens or are you just glad to see me?

Bloatware

Some definite improvement here. Maybe that deal with Google to dial back on customisation has started showing results. This is a good thing, of course.

Camera

Should be more than very good. The blazingly fast autofocus is indeed a great feature! Thumbs up for this one!

Should you get it?

Do you need a fingerprint and a heart rate sensor on your phone? If yes, go get it. It is the only phone in the world that has them both. If not, stick with your S4 or your iPhone or your whatever it is that you carry for the time being.
The back side is more interesting than the front one. And it comes in four (as expected two-word) colours.

The Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo

Gear 2
I have already told you what i think about the twins. Sadly they incorporate no GPS. For God's sake why not? It would be an almost perfect device that could also replace my MotoACTV when i go jogging. But no, Sammy had to (apparently) spoil this one too. Why?

Regarding compatibility, the twins work with 17 Galaxy phones and this is a good thing, but what about other Android phones? What about WP and the iPhone? Huh?

Gear Neo
Aside from the above two though, i really love the Gear 2 and the Neo. The battery will be more than adequate (and trust me on this one), the design is great, the build quality is fantastic, the options (with/without camera - metal/plastic) are enough. All that remains is the pricing. If Sammy really wants people to get on the Gear bandwagon they have to be fairly priced. We shall see about this, however...

The Gear Fit

The front
This was a total surprise for me, as well as for everybody else i think. It offered one of these rare moments of true ecstasy for gadget freak tech heads like me when we saw smth officially presented that had not leaked in the near past. I almost pissed my pants!

It is a good looking device that is absolutely fitness oriented but completely trumps all other fitness bands so far with each extra smartwatch notification functionality. It sports a curved sexy OLED screen as well as the same HR sensor Samsung will soon be giving away when you buy a giant pack of potato chips, it is very lightweight at 27g, the battery life is more than adequate at four days and you can have it on your wrist all the time because it is water resistant and is supposed to be hypoallergenic (unlike the Fitbit Force).

The back

If only it had a GPS hidden somewhere in it's minuscule brain, it would be PERFECT. But it doesn't, or we would have been told, right? Also, what about compatibility? Again only with 20 (this time) Samsung  phones? What about the other 17 million devices out there? as well.
Still it is an original and quite innovative device that looks very promising to my eyes and to most tech reviewers' eyes

The Gear software

Just as a side note, there was no mention of Tizen OS that runs the GEAR twins (the Fit is running a custom OS, i think). It seems that Sammy is trying to make the switch from Android as transparent as can be.

Last but not least, the SDK is going to be available to devs very soon, which may be exactly what the whole smartwatch industry needs in order to take off.

Samsung Gear Fit

Oh man, what a surprise!!! A device that had not leaked!

The talk(you out of it)band

The Huawei talkband

Hey readers, have you seen the Huawei talkband that was presented yesterday at the MWC?
Have you?

"This thing is a Frankenstein... It feels like an April Fool's joke." as some commenter in the relative Engadget article gently put it.

The Huawei talk band

My thoughts

BT headset detached
Let me tell you how i feel about it.
First of all it is ugly as sin. And this is a strictly personal opinion.
It is too bulky and this is something that could have been totally avoided if only there was no detachable BT headset. Why make this detachable dear Huawei engineers? Is there any apparent reason for that? I mean why not do it the Gear way? Just lift the "talkband" towards our mugs and talk? Sounds bad? Uhmmm... well, how about this?

Scenario 1:

Phone rings. The talkband vibrates and you are alerted. You then detach the headset paying attention not to drop it on the street and fuss around while trying to align it the right way so that it plugs into your ear canal.

Scenario 2:

Phone rings. The talkband vibrates and you are alerted. You then take the phone out of your pocket and talk.

What would you choose? For God's sake tell me what would you choose?

Let me move on to the other big issue i see. The orientation of the screen is landscape, whereas the band is supposed to be vertically positioned on someone's (not mine - that is for sure) wrist. Do you see what i am talking about?

Last but not least, this thing looks like it is quite enormous in size. Did i also mention it is as ugly as it is big?

On the bright side, the price seems to be good. The promised battery life is good. The charger plug embedded on the plug is certainly good. Plus, Huawei has actually tried to innovate with the whole detachable headset idea, even though i do not like it and it seems to me that it is poorly designed.

All in all, i suggest that you wait for the Razer Nabu before forking out your hard earned cash.

The Gear twins are official

The twins

Okay readers, I am not gonna tell you what you already know about the twins. I am here to discuss a bit about what we learned today.

First of all it is two of them:

The twins

The hi end Gear 2

Gear 2 - front

Gear 2 - back

The cheaper Gear 2 Neo

Gear 2 Neo - front

Gear 2 Neo - back
The obvious difference between the two is that the Neo does not sport a camera, whereas it also 13g lighter than it's brother and hopefully quite cheaper so that to justify it's existence along the Gear 2. Let me remind you that the original Gear was 74g and tell you that the Gear 2 is 68g, so do the math to see how much the Neo weighs (hint: it is not a lot). This difference in weight kind of suggests a different material in my book. We will find out soon enough.

Both babies:

  • Come with Tizen OS and this may be a good thing.
    • First of all with a little smaller battery Samsung promises three times the stamina of the original, which is quite a feat in itself and directly related to the OS choice.
    • Then, fOmey (the person who transformed the original Gear to the beast it is right now) over at XDA thinks he could hack the s**t out of the Gear 2! (Have i ever mentioned i love this guy?)
  • Have a slightly bumped up dual core 1GHz processor.
  • Feature a heart rate sensor, ala Adidas micoach smartwatch.
  • Support sleep tracking magic.
  • Have IR blaster for uhmmm you know blasting IR.
The camera hump on the Gear I has disappeared and the camera has moved on top of the screen. The speaker that was formerly being housed in the clasp is gone (again you may find it in the watch itself). This renders the straps kind of interchangeable. The lack of which was something many people where whining about in the past.

However, there are some considerations:
  • Is the placement of the camera on the Gear 2 a well thought out one? Will it be pointing outwards like the original? How about video calling from the watch? Can this be achieved?
  • The speaker on the first Gear, although resulting in a rather uncomfortable clasp, was in the perfect position if your intention was to speak on the watch with the volume set to low (so that only you can hear the other side). I am not sure if this remains the case now.

What is still missing (assuming we know all there is to know)

For God's sake Samsung, you put a God damned optical heart rate sensor on the watch, you made it capable of playing MP3s through BT headset (no need for a phone nearby), didn't you? Where is the GPS then? Uh? How am i supposed to go jogging and track my route, huh? Please, please, please tell me that there is a GPS chipset hidden in there somewhere...

Compatibility

For me the questions (in order of significance) are simple:
  • Will it work with an iPhone out of the box?
  • Will it work with Androids that are not made by Samsung?
  • Will it work with WP8?

What about the Gear 1 owners?

I have already seen some people bitching about the fact that the Gear 2 was announced too soon. They are saying they lost money on this one and Sammy is the one to blame.

Dear Gear 1 owners, you knew (or you should have known) you are early adopters. You knew you were pioneers. You knew you were paying for smth many people have never heard of. You knew the second Gear was on the pipeline for a long long time. Some rumours were there even before the Gear 1 was available to buy. So please stop.

I have bought the original Gear for 300 EUR, fully knowing that i am wasting hard earned money. This is how it is with tech products. I have got used to it. If you want to buy a gadget that keeps it's price high for quite some time, go get a good telescope. Or an iPhone. End of story.

The Galaxy Gear 2 twins

Dear readers the infamous evleaks has done it again! A few hours ago he tweeted a picture of the Galaxy Gear 2 (left) and the Galaxy Gear 2 Neo (right). After a while he stated that: "I misspoke. Those watches are not Galaxy-branded.", which lead many people believe that they may be Tizen based after all.
They both sport front facing cameras and some kind of home button under the screen. They are supposed to be siblings but not twins:
  • Gear 2
    • Appears to have metal body
    • May have more features
  • Gear 2 Neo
    • Appears to be entirely made of plastic
The good thing is that very soon we will find out everything about both. MWC 2014 is just around the corner, thank God!

UPDATE: 25 mins ago evleaks produced  a new (hires) photo of Gear 2 on his twitter account:

It would seem that the watch is thinner that it's predecessor. The clasp remains the same. The physical button moved from the side to under the screen. There may be some kind of sensor above the screen and next to the camera. I have started counting down the minutes until the Gear 2 and the Neo are officially presented.

iHaveGoodNews

Hey everyone, just wanted to share some really good news with you!

I am very happy (and proud) to announce that the famous myphone.gr tech portal (home for more than 180k members) is hosting a greek version of my Galaxy Gear review

You can find it (beware though, it's in greek language) here. The review also contains two videos (again in greek language):
  • Unboxing - First impressions
  • Hands-on review
See you soon and thanks for reading.

Do you have the right Gear?

Wearables

Hey readers, i know you already know but still i need to repeat myself: Wearables are the next big thing. Trust me on this one. Smartwatches, smart glasses, smart clothing, smart underwear, smart shoes, smart you name it (as long as you can put it on) are the thing to wait for. The future is coming and you know what? You will be wearing it.

Preparing my gear

I have already told you i was eagerly waiting for the Galaxy Gear from the first moment i saw it being presented to the world. (In the weeks following the unpacked event i got rid of my HTC One and purchased a Galaxy S4 instead. My sole purpose was to have the right gear for the Gear.) It truly was love at first sight. It also was the first ever smartwatch attempt from a major player. Till then, there were of course some very good (and many more ranging from pretty bad to total rubbish) options but nothing from a very large manufacturer.

First impressions

So the first day one could buy the watch in Greece, i went to the shops with desire burning a hole in my pocket. It was a Saturday night and it could not get any better. Hands trembling i opened the box and took out the first ever smartwatch that actually looked good. Let me tell you this straight away: The Galaxy Gear screams quality when you see/touch it. The steel case, the sexy (as well as large) OLED screen, the strap with the embedded camera lens, the clasp are all very well put together with the end result being a sturdy device of pleasing appearance. Nothings croaks when you touch/push/caress it, completely unlike the Galaxy S smth phones. It may be the first ever Samsung mobile device that is not plastic and does not feel cheap. Still, Samsung had to destroy the magic moment. Imagine a perfect date with a perfect girl (or whatever suits your needs) that started in a perfect restaurant and continued in a perfect little bar for some (okay, maybe too many) perfect cocktails and then a perfect ride home and at the exact same moment that you have started moving your mug towards her perfect face in order to give the perfect kiss (that her body language has explicitly shown that she wants as much as you do) your stomach growls loudly and within a few (which by the way are more than enough for her pretty face to morph into a mask of perfect disgust) seconds you throw up your perfect (and mostly undigested - these carry sausages actually looked like they would be a little harsh for your stomach (note to self: do not eat my date's leftovers next time)) dinner as well as your perfect drinks. Boom. Was that vivid enough for you? No? Let me try again: It feels like staying in the Four Seasons for one night (that costs half a lifetime's savings) and discovering that the bed linen is stained with smth indeterminable. Get it now? This is how it felt when i saw the charging craddle. It is by far the flimsiest, most impractical and ill thought out, cheap feeling/looking/being piece of plastic that i have ever seen popping out of a 300 EUR worth box. The contrast between the craddle and the watch itself is unimaginable. To make things even worse it even sports the same faux leather back that the Galaxy Note 3 introduced. If anyone from the top management over at Samsung ever sees this, please do your company a big favour and kindly (being kind is not absolutely compulsory) ask the person responsible for this stylistic choice (the abominable faux leather looking cheap plastic thing, i mean) to get out of the company. And never come back. Ever. I am not a specialist in the field (or any field now that i think about it), but please please please dear Sammy consider my advice: If you want to stay out of brushed steel/aluminium/etc. and stick to plastic, DO IT THE NOKIA WAY. Simple as that.

Back to the Gear, then. Oh man, it looks good on the wrist and it feels unbelievably comfortable. The exact opposite from the Casio G-shock BT enabled watch. Just a little smth here that i need to tell you people. The initial reviews were very negative and really unfair. I was closely watching the reviews at the time and i feel that they did not do justice to this rather extraordinary first Sammy smartwatch. In fact, the early reviews were that disheartening that they may had really contributed in preventing the Gear from taking off the selves, if you see what i mean.

The review

The connection

The Gear is connected to the phone through Bluetooth. BLE to be specific. I know you already knew, but i am telling you just in case you are reading the wrong blog.

The must haves

If you want to make the Gear work you must have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or Note 2 or Galaxy S4 or S3 or S4 mini or smth else from a very distinguished and absolutely finite set that includes a handful of Sammy devices with Android ver 4.3 and hardware BLE support. At least this is what Samsungs claims.

Still, you can make do with other (non Samsung) Android BLE equipped handsets and even the evil iPhone. Yeap. Believe me or not, some limited functionality is there even when using the Gear with an iPhone.

The looks

I have already told you that: The Gear looks good. Too good, actually. Brushed steel casing, big - gorgeous - sexy - deep black OLED screen, sturdy strap seamlessly attached to the case. The camera hump is more obvious than an insect on your glass of milk and it feels to me that Sammy chose to make it protrude as much as it does in order to actively prevent these "basic instict" voyer wannabe moments. That is why the shutter release sound cannot be deactivated (as long as the watch is not tampered with).

The strap comes in a variety of colors ranging from from "wannabe CEO" to "funky is my middle name". If you pay attention you might see the tiny twin mic holes on the case, whereas you can't miss the speakerphone built into the clasp.  The design screams industrial and the four screws further intensify the raw power feeling. Just as a sidenote, there were some early reviewers complaining that the screws were not perfectly aligned (not that this was actually a design prerequisite) for Christ's sake! Get a life, people. And that's me - a gadget addict tech propellerhead nolifer - telling you. All in all, it looks pleasing to the eye and the build quality is good enough to make you think that this product could be an iDevice.

The battery

Sammy says the Gear can do more than 25 hours on a single charge. The early reviews claimed that it ate through the battery faster than you can say "I am deeply inclined to write a very negative review of the (possibly) best smartwatch so far because i have not spent enough time with it so that to be able to reach a fair and  rather objective conclusion and this may be only half the truth i am admitting to right now...". The Gear (as well as every battery powered gadget's) battery life should be evaluated after a few cycles have been completed. It is directly related to the screen brightness level and amount of notifications / talk time. Assuming you set the brightness to an intermmediate level, use the Gear to make half an hour's worth of phonecalls and have a rather active social (notifications) life AND ARE NOT PLAYING WITH THE CAMERA ALL THE TIME it should last for a whole day with ease. If you disable the wake up gesture (which is a huge battery hog) i have already told you about then you should expect about three days of juice. Easily. If you turn it off at nights it could do 4 or even 5 days, always with the shake to wake thing set to off. Of course, the initial FW version did a little worse but still the early reviews were unfair. All in all, the battery life is quite good. Not "Pebble great" bust still quite good and i am sure it would not actually bother the kind of person who charges his phone and laptop every night and his tablet twice a week.

The do's

What can this thing do, after all? Right out of the box, that is.
  • First of all it tells the time. Kind of. I mean that the screen is normally off (you can select how much time it stays on after waking up - smth between 7 seconds and 5 minutes) and you can turn it on either by pressing the single button or by doing what you would normally do if you actually wanted to check the time on your wristwatch (the quite obvious movement of turning your wrist and bringing your hand towards your face). Magic, ladies and gentlemen. Beware though, magic always comes at a cost. The catch here is that enabling this gesture is quite a battery hog. More on this later.
  • It shows notifications and vibrates accordingly. The vibration motor is strong and you adjust the level of intensity. Notifications include everything that your Galaxy phone considers to be a notification, including calls, SMSs, social network notifications and whatever else your alarmingly high number of installed apps can provide. That has not always been the case, though. Early adopters (such as me) had to make do with the orginal Gear frimware that could only notify you about a handful of events. However, even back then the community was trying to address the problem and eventually Sammy released the MK7 firmaware version that solved the issue (while at the sametime shutting the early reviewers mouths for good). Facebook, Twitter, Instagram notifications are a joy to dismiss on the watch. This actually is the what the whole smartwatch concept is all about, after all. A complimentary second screen that you can access with minimum hassle that saves time and provides some added value.
  • Caller ID is there and caller photos as well. Your Galaxy's contacts are synced over to the watch. SMSs also and you can read the whole text on the watch without fetching your (too big) phone from your pocket or purse or wherever you tend to forget it.
  • Count your steps towards the future with the builtin pedometer and even display their number on the watch face screen.
  • Record voice memos of up to 5 mins and auto transfers them to your Galaxy device.
  • Auto lock your Galaxy phone, if the two are not within two meters of each other. It simply is the most ingenious locking mechanism for your smartphone ever conceived, although it does require a smartphone and a smartwatch. If you have it within your grasp then you do not have to unlock it, otherwise you do. Simple. Effective. Elegant. Does not require the collection of sensitive personal biometric data (are you watching this, Apple?).
  • S-Voice functionality. Yes your childhood Knight Rider turbocharged dreams of speaking to your watch and commanding it to do something have finally come true. You can ask about the weather, ask it to call someone, ask it a question (we have had quite some fun at the office with one particular question...) even reply to an incoming SMS without ever touching the phone, among others.
  • Run a number of dedicated apps that can be easily downloaded from Samsung that extend the Gear's capabilities. Last time i checked there were about 75 of them including Runkeeper, EverNote, eBay and many more.

The love

There are a few things you cannot but fall in love with:

  • The handsfree functionality is a great idea. I know you are not convinced. Especially those unlucky few among you who have had the misfortune to try to justify the money you wasted on the i'mwatch. I know i was really skeptic towards the whole "put a speaker and two mic holes on the watch" thing, but let me assure you. It just works. Unlike the i'mwatch the voice quality is very good unless you crank it all the way up. Other people hear you loud and clear as well. What? You don't wanna look like a dork speaking to your wrist? Totally agree. This should only happen when nobody sees you, like when you are at home doing the dishes. For all other occasions that require a minimum of socially acceptable behaviour, all you have to do is set the speaker volume to one or two (out of six) and raise your wrist to speak. Imagine raising your hand to speak to the phone, only there is no phone. The whole "talk to the hand" idea just got a tad more literal. This way only you can hear the other side and the whole gesture is absolutely normal, even though it puts some strain on your arm because you lift it a little higher than what you would do if you were  indeed holding a phone.
  • The smart relay functionality is again a splendid idea. Assuming you have a compatible Galaxy phone, let's say you receive an email and the Gear vibrates to let you know. You look at the watch and see the subject of the email as well as a few words of the body and then you decide you just wanna read this on the phone itself. All you have to do is get it out of your pocket and it automatically fires up the mail client and opens that particular email you have started reading on the Gear. Thank you Samsung for this "make my miserable life a little bit better" gimmick.
  • The charging time is approximately one hour and this while totally expected (the battery is 350 mAh after all) remains a very good thing.
  • The Gear feels very comfortable on the wrist. My (rather smallish) wrist at least. Although i would consider it rather heavy at 74 grams it is perfect when i wear it. Having tried quite a lot smart watches so far, i can guarantee that it is the best fit i have ever experienced.

The "i wanna marry you"

The camera is FANTASTIC. Again: The camera is unbelievably good. Both stills and videos rock. Even low light photos taken with the Gear BSI camera sensor look quite good and far better than you would expect. Another bonus is the fact that the placement of the camera on your wrist facing outwards provides the opportunity for some very interesting and quite unique angles. All in all, i am amazed at how good this camera is. It may only be 1.9 megapixel but you already know that the pixel count is not the most important aspect when assessing the quality of a sensor. Uhm, almost forgot: It is by far the fastest/easiest camera you have ever used. You just activate the screen by doing the wrist gesture and then swipe down and then tap as many times as you want photos. May sound like much, but the total time needed is less than half of what Flash himself would need in order to pull the phone out of his pocket, fumble with the screen trying to unlock it, open the camera app and press the shutter onscreen button. Of course, the photos and videos are automatically transferred via BT to your Galaxy smartphone gallery for further use.

The dont's

  • The Gear is supposed to sport an IP 55 rating regrding it's resistance to water and dust. As Samsung puts it: "IP55 rating means that device is protected against penetration of dust in quantity to interfere satisfactory operation and harmful ingress of water under test condition of spraying the enclosure from any direction with a stream of water from a standard 6.3mm diameter test nozzle for up to 3 minutes. According to accredited test results by Korea Labouratory Accreditation Scheme, individual results may vary." Let me make it clear for the non lawyers among you, dear readers. You cannot swim or have a shower or walk/dance in the rain with the watch on your wrist. You (of course) cannot submerge it. You cannot do the dishes if you are even a tiny little careless. You cannot put it on and work out, unless you do not sweat at all - which means that either you are not really working out or you have superhuman powers. If you do have this kind of power please ff us to November 2014 so that we can buy the iWatch and then die peacefully. You cannot live a normal life when wearing the Gear. When i say you cannot i don't actually mean that. Of course you can, but chances are the Gear will be a dead Gear pretty soon. There is no but here, Mr Pranav Mistry. It can be done and it has been done before more times than a mutant with five pairs of hands could count using all his fingers. All the latest Xperias are 100% water resistant. A smartwatch HAS TO BE water resistant. Please do not forget about it next time.
  • The battery should be better. I know it is not easy at all, but someone has to do it. And that someone has to be one of the big players out there. A week's worth of juice even with heavy usage is the target. We are close to being there. A form of wireless charging would also be nice to have, provided it will not result in a thicker case.
  • A front facing camera would be nice to have. It does not have to be a great camera, mind you. Just a little something to enable video calling from your wrist. Dick Tracy wannabes will certainly appreciate that. Used to have that on the LG GD910 watch phone and it was a real head turning attraction and a great conversation opener. Sadly only male geeks like me were interested.
  • What? No GPS on board? I know Samsung is saving it for the next generation, but it should have been included. It could provide some real added value for fitness enthusiasts. Besides it would be nice if we could use a navigation app offline without having to carry a smartphone as well?

The worst

  • The charging/sync cradle is rubbish. I can't say if it is more impractical than ugly or the opposite. Either way it is quite feat in itself that this thing ever got through quality control over at Sammy's headquarters. It makes me wonder: Didn't anyone see it before it was put into mass production? It is badly made, makes you think that it will break any second, feels cheap and is looking ugly. Want more? In the early days it was quite difficult to find another one in case you lost or broke the original one. Which pretty much left you with a 300 Eur 74 grams paperweight in the shape of a watch. The truly unbelievable thing is that all they had to do was look at the Pebble ingenious charger cable, which in turn reminds me a lot of Macbook magsafe connectors. But no, they had to use something with a faux leather texture which we so much loved (and this is a joke ladies and gentlemen) on the latest Galaxy Note.
  • The Gear is basically really compatible with five Samsung smartphones and this is about it. I understand that Sammy is basically trying to intrench and enhance it's ecosystem, but still it is shame that other Android (okay, BLE capable) devices cannot fully utilise the watch through the Gear manager. Furthermore, why not make it iPhone compatible? I know more than a few iPhone users (myself included) that would love to use the Gear, but not so much so that to exchange their phones for Galaxy S smth phones.

The hows

You interact with the Gear through it's gorgeous 1,6 inch 320*320 pixel multitouch square screen by tapping or swiping with your finger(s). There is also a hardware button on the side that can wake the watch and pressing it multiple times may lead to a predefined (by you) action. The whole menu system is quite intuitive and not as frustrating as it could have been, considering the screen size. Just in case you are sausage fingered, the kind of person who can pull single fingered chord magic when playing the piano, i would suggest that you try it out first. But if that is the case, i can guarantee you are going to have trouble with most smartwatches out there. Still, i guess that most geeks (like me) will be more than able to pinpoint the exact pixel they want with their bony little fingers. It seems to me that the ability to fiddle with tiny on screen controls has been genetically imprinted on the latest generation's DNA and things are getting better (worse) all the time. Give it enough time and we will see kids with a multitude of extremely thin tendril looking frail fingers mercilessly tapping on touchscreens from the first minute they are born. Okay, let's stop the nightmare here. It takes a few minutes to remember the finger gestures that you need but after that you certainly feel at home navigating the Gear menu. End of story.

The community

Fot those of you who haven't figured out yet, the Galaxy Gear with the official FW is a beast on a leash. Imagine a huge and extremely powerful dog that his master has scared to death with an electric collar turning it from the proud wild carnivorous uncontrollable beast it was supposed to be to a tiny weeny mousy miserable creature that whines like a little kid that did not receive the latest iPod for Christmas whereas his cousins already have it.

Thank God for the XDA developers, then. The devs over there got real crazy with the Gear from the first minute they had it in their hands. Back then the notifications were severely limited and there was no way to load non Samsung apps onto the Gear.  These were the first things to tackle, as well as the camera shutter sound.

Pretty soon we could side load apps/files via ADB commands (Sammy gave the developer menu option on the watch - go to Settings > Gear Info > and Tap Software Version 10 times and then enable USB Debugging) on both PC/Mac as well as through Wondershare MobileGo for those who are afraid of white text on a black background. Then there were two different attempts to enable Gear notifications from all phone apps. Then of course they managed to root the Gear.  For all who have been desperate to make the shutter sound go away so that to indulge into their fantasies without the risk of getting caught let me tell you it has also been done. (Creeps all over the world still celebrate that day.)

The revolution

All the above achievements made geeks more than happy, but it wasn't until the first custom ROM that tech heads the world over wept with joy. It was thanks to null ROM that the beast broke it's chains and was allowed to reach it's full potential. The Gear packs very powerful hardware and Android ver. 4.2.2  in a watch form factor. We are talking about a dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU with half a gig of RAM. It may not sound like a lot compared to the latest Android super smartphones, but you can bet it is more than enough for a watch.

XDA member fOmey is the man to thank for transforming your watch to a full fledged Android jellybean mean machine. Yes, that great man has produced 25 or so revisions of his ROM and is still pumping out ROMs faster than most of us can manage to keep up with. Before ver. 11 one had to flash through Odin whereas the later ones were Custom Recovery compatible. So what?

After flashing the null ROM you have complete control over your smartwatch. You can install every app your heart desires, provided the square low res - for a smartphone that is - screen does not mess with the app's graphics. Let me make this clear here and now. With the official firmware the Gear relies one hundred percent on the Gear Manager app that should be running on your compatible Samsung smartphone for all it's communication needs with the outer world.

With null ROM you can:

  • BT tether it to your smartphone and allow it to run apps that require an active internet connection.
  • Install and use the whole Google Apps suite, including PlayStore and Google Now.
  • Intall any keyboard you want, including Fleksy.
  • Get rid of the Samsung interface and use instead a full launcher like Nova.
  • Pass the GPS signal from your Android phone to the Gear via BT and run Google Maps and navigate (with voice) from your wrist (any cyclists out there?).
  • Connect the Gear with non Samsung BLE capable Android phones and even with iPhones > 4s!
    • Of course the functionality you get when using it with an iPhone is severely limited, but still you get:
      • Basic handsfree calling with Caller ID (just number, no names & photos unfortunately).
      • BT tethering of the watch to the iPhone so that all Gear natively installed apps run perfectly, e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and many many more.
You can find out more about fOmey's Gear related work in his personal website. What i can tell you is that the guy is a genius and if it was within my powers i would nominate him Sir for his contribution.

The evolution

A custom kernel for the Gear, called Triangulum, has been presented by XDA dev lilstevie who among others managed to enable the second processor core. You may now boast that your watch is burning through it's battery life (like a dehydrated man left for a couple of days on the desert would go through his favourite chilled energy drink) while running on it's full capacity of 1.6 GHz!

Other devs have created solutions for initiating canned SMSs directly from the watch, changing the background colour or having a notifier widget on the watch screen that informs the user about unread notifications.

The verdict

Is it the best smartwatch out there? That would be a definite yes, if not for the Pebble (my review here) and especially the Pebble Steel. The Pebble and the Gear are two different faces of the smartwatch coin and not directly comparable, but still they are your best options while waiting for the iWatch. If you prefer the handsfree functionality, the camera, the S-voice/Google Now and the extremely powerful fully fledged Android OS over the always on screen, the 10-day battery life, guaranteed water resistance and Android/iOS full compatibility is something that you dear reader should decide upon.

Whatever you choose though, let me tell you that the Gear is a wonderful device that really shows the way to the future. Of course it is a gen. one device and the second Gear is on it's way but there are some wonderful opportunities to grab it for half the original price! If you own a compatible Galaxy device i would definitely encourage you to search for a good bargain and catch that train to wearable's Heaven.

If not, the Pebble could be your best bet. If you want to play it safe, i think you should wait for the iWatch and the Gear 2 and then choose depending on your smartphone of choice.
